Senior Mutt Adoption Stories
Adopt Old Dogs!
Hopefully, these wonderful, personal stories will encourage you to adopt an older dog of your own. If you adopted an older dog recently and would like to share your story with Senior Mutt Match, please email us a photo of your dog along with a short story about why an older dog is such a wonderful addition to your life.
This page contains photos of the sweet seniors that were once listed on our site and are now living happily ever after in their forever homes. If you adopt a senior mutt that was listed on this site, please email us an update. We would love to post a story and/or photo of you and your senior mutt.
Chance
(adopted at age 7)
I guess it is appropriate to start off the senior mutt adoption stories with our story about Chance, our beloved Corgi and Golden Retriever mix. Talk about a funny combination; we could never make it more than a few feet down the street or the beach before someone asked with a smile and a giggle, "What kind of dog is that"? I saw Chance at a local humane society and went home crying because he looked like the sweetest dog in the world. One night of tears and my husband and I were there the next day to adopt him.
I have two dogs and two cats that I love very much but Chance will always have a special place in my heart. When we first brought him home, he refused to walk on grass. Such a quirky thing but adorable to us. He loved the beach since he didn't have an issue with sand, and eventually he learned to love running on the grass. He would use his short little Corgi legs to run figure eights in our front yard when he was really excited.
Chance was considered a "senior" dog when we adopted him but you could never tell it from the amount of energy he had. The bonus was that he loved long walks or romps on the beach but he would also snooze on his bed inside the house while we were at work all day. We never had to worry about accidents since he was completely housebroken from the day we adopted him.
Since Chance was also a mutt, we had the best of two breeds. He had the Corgi attitude and acted like he was a much bigger dog, combined with the loving, people friendly attitude of a Golden Retriever. Chance would pose patiently with a Santa hat on at Christmas and dress up for our Derby Days barbeques. He was always the life of any party that we had. Chance also loved to curl up next to his "mom" and watch her beloved Redskins games every Sunday during football season
Sadly, Chance passed away two years ago and I miss him every single day. The only comfort I take is that Chance was able to spend his golden years in a home that loved him more than they could ever show him. That precious, silly looking dog was always there for us with his silly bark, goofy smile and loving, loving heart. It is because of him that I created this website and I hope that all the senior mutts in shelters will find a loving home like Chance. We miss you buddy!
Shelia (formerly Delilah) and her new brother Murphy
(She was adopted after her parents saw her at our adoption event and fell in love)
Just wanted to inform you that we adopted Delilah over the weekend. I originally saw her advertised for the IKEA event and had seen here there. I kept checking your site and finally decided to check her out. We went down to the shelter on Saturday with our 9yr old lab and two kids and everything went fine. She loved visiting Dog beach and then came home and curled up on her bed. We foster dogs for FOCAS and she is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever come across. Shelia is currently living with a load of foster puppies and she loves playing with them. They crawl all over her and she gives them the fake growl and licks them. Thanks for putting up such an awesome site for older dogs.
Tommy
This is a picture of Tommy on our couch sleeping (which is what he does most of the time). I am a volunteer at the North County Humane Society. For six weeks I walked this little mop that didn't get a look at all. The only reason people looked in his cage was because he was rubbing his behind on it. He had a terrible flea allergy that he lost all of his hair on his rump. If you ever got to see the front of his face you would see one eye completely white with discharge and a cataract in the other, missing teeth, and rough greasy hair. For six weeks I walked this dog and it broke my heart. I already had two dogs in my home. One was from the shelter to be a buddy for a dog we found on the side of the freeway. So one day I couldn't take it anymore and Mr. Tommy came home with me.
His first vet visit:
Seborrhea (the skin follicle disease) so shampoo twice a month to keep the hair follicles free of dirt and oil.
Flea Allergy Dermatitis-shampoo for that because oral steroids could kill him with a heart murmur!
No vision out of one eye due to some form of trauma and partial day vision out of the other eye
Two ear infections with two rupture ear drums-probably never hear again-medicine for that
Two tumors possibly fatty so just monitor them
Missing teeth with horrible breath
In dire need of a toenail clipping
All in all not bad:)
Now almost a year later Tommy has all his hair back, can hear our one dog bark when its time to walk, time to eat, and time to go out back. He loves walks, loves to eat, and loves to ride in the car and stick his head out the window. He has been the best dog and so easy to love. He has such a different personality and we are blessed he has been a part of our life. He is slowing down and it makes me sad but I know he has spent his golden years in a loving home.
Sincerely,
Kim Dollins

Torrey
(adopted from Central Animal Shelter)
I saw my very best friend and canine companion, a Mastiff/Rottie cross of delightfully graceful senior status, now named Torrey, on Senior Mutt Match and I am eternally, enormously grateful. We tell all our friends everywhere we go to look on Senior Mutt Match and to open their hearts to older dogs - because they are the BEST!!
We are still so thankful for all you do -
Love & Happy Paws Always,
Dyan & Torrey
Buster (formerly Harvey from Central)
Adopted at 14
Buster was found as a stray in January 2005. He was kept at the Central Animal Shelter, where he quickly became a favorite of the staff and visitors alike. However, no one adopted Buster (then known as Harvey). After a couple of weeks the 14-year-old dog started to show signs of depression. He didn't get off of his bed to visit with the staff at feeding time. The staff gave him some extra love and a blanket, but Buster needed more than that. Buster needed a loving home. One woman named Annalisa made it her mission to do just that.
Annalisa went home without Buster that night, but couldn't sleep a wink. She knew that Buster wanted a home of his own. Unfortunately, Annalisa lives in a small condo and cannot adopt any more dogs. But, that didn't stop her from making a difference in Buster's life. The next day Annalisa started her campaign to find Buster a home.
Imagine her surprise when the next day she found Buster's picture at the Senior Mutt Adoption web site!
She did everything: posted online, sent out emails, called friends, talked to co-workers, posted flyers and searched online for ideas. She visited Animal Control and spent time with Buster. She found out as much as possible about Buster's personality. After only 2 days, her work paid off. A friend mentioned Annalisa's love of
Buster to a friend. Bette and Dan called Annalisa to express their interest in providing Buster with a home. Annalisa was thrilled. She adopted Buster and brought him to meet Bette and Dan. Annalisa knew that Buster was never going to go back to an Animal Shelter again, no matter what she had to do. When Buster met Bette and Dan it was a perfect match. Buster checked out the surroundings and even used the doggy door right away to get to the back yard!
Buster loves Bette and Dan, and really enjoys the back yard. Buster spends hours lying around in the grass and under his favorite plant. He chooses to sleep outside most of the time. He loves his walks in the orchard with Dan. Buster does have some arthritis, and is slow to get going some times. Buster is a very lucky dog because he has two wonderful parents. And, he also he also has a fairy dog-mother.
Teddy and his mom
(adopted at age 8)
We adopted a wonderful dog from our local humane society, (Pomona Valley in L.A. County), an 8 year old terrier-and-something mix. He is the light in our lives, housetrained, great on a leash, an instant member of the family. My only sadness is that his time with us will be shorter than if we had adopted him as a younger dog, but we try every day to make his life good. As a result of the happiness he's brought us, and in an effort to help other
dogs, I am now volunteering at the local shelter.
Mattie
(adopted at age 16)
Mattie came to San Diego Spaniel Rescue as a stray from a local shelter. The victim of a car accident - she ended up losing her eye. They were able to find out some history about her. She was hit by a car only one block from her home. She worked her way out from the back yard on numerous occasions, this wasn't the first. Remarkably, she survived, they were able to get her the necessary medical attention to help with her eye and she is thriving at 16.5 years young!!!! Well, last weekend we had a wonderful young couple want to foster her for us and last night I got the word. Instead of a permanent foster (due to her age, we offered that option to them) they are ready to adopt her outright! I love happy endings! And so does Mattie.
Christmas 2003
From left to right:Roxy, Sandy, Baker, Bonita and Casey.
I have adopted two seniors from Retrievers and Friends (www.retrieversandfriends.com). Actually, I was fostering each of them and just couldn't let either one of them leave.
Bonita is 9 years old. She was 7 when we adopted her. She came from the San Diego South County shelter and she had some health issues. We fixed her up and she feels sooooo good now. We love her dearly and I couldn't imagine living without her. I think that Bonita means pretty in Spanish. To me it means 'beautiful'.
We adopted Roxy last year. She was a stray at the San Diego North county shelter. Since she was a stray, we don't know her exact age, but the shelter estimated her at 10 years old. She is such a loving dog. She wants to be right next to you or in your lap :) She also loves to swim!!
We have 3 other golden retrievers, Sandy, Casey and Baker. The seniors are the best dogs. We occasionally foster for Retrievers and Friends and most of our foster dogs have been senior goldens. They are so easy to
foster and so appreciative.

Chance
(formerly "Truffles" from Chula Vista)
Hi, my name is Christine and I have a new family member thanks to Senior Mutt Match and the Chula Vista Animal Shelter. I found him while looking at your site in early August. My best buddy of 17 years, Beau, died of cancer and old age in June and I had not planned on getting another dog for at least a year, but once I saw “Truffles” as he was tagged by the shelter I was smitten. I had to wait while they did a temper assessment and then had to wait some more because they said two other people had requested him. I was very discouraged and sad.
I had given up hope of ever hearing back when much to my surprise 10 a.m. on Friday August 19 I got a call…I got THE call. “Truffles” was mine if I wanted him. Silly question, and even though I was at work I took my lunch hour (actually more like 2 hours) and drove to the shelter and got my boy! Talk about love at first sight….there are no words to truly describe the happy warm feeling I get just knowing he is home waiting for me and oh, by the way Truffles has a new name that fits us both. He and I settled on Chance as in second chance, for both of us I think.
Anyway that’s our story and I just want to say we owe it all to Senior Mutt Match because without you I wouldn’t have found the rest of my family.
Here are two pictures of Chance at home. The top picture is his “I’m a happy dog!” look and the second is Chance doing his impression of a swimmer. He loves to stretch out on the carpet or grass for that matter and pull himself forward with his front paws, just like a swimmer. He’s such a jolly little fellow, always happy and eager to please and I am sooo happy. I owe it all to you and your wonderful website Senior Mutt Match.
